As Peter makes clear, try as they might, the Old Testament prophets were unable to pinpoint the exact time or circumstances at which the Messiah would be revealed. Now that the Messiah had actually appeared, Peter and his fellow apostles were able to proclaim the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of Old Testament expectations. This is why Peter can later in the chapter claim that the reference to the word of the Lord in Isaiah 40:8 actually is “the word that was preached as the gospel to you” (1 Pet 1:25). In the telescope of history, hindsight is 20/20, but we shouldn’t level the playing field unduly by overlooking the salvation-historical progression that needs to be taken into account when interpreting a given individual passage of Scripture.
